Battle of Havana

The Battle of Havana was fought between 12–14 October 1748 off Havana between the British and Spanish navies during the War of Jenkins' Ear. A British squadron under Rear-Admiral of the Red Charles Knowles attacked a Spanish squadron led by Lieutenant-general Andrés Reggio during an attempt by Knowles to intercept the Spanish treasure fleet. Knowles' squadron succeeded in driving Reggio's back to Havana after capturing one ship of the line and driving the Spanish flagship ashore, where she was blown up by her crew after being fully dismasted. The battle ended when the British discovered news of the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which ended both the War of the Jenkins' Ear and the wider War of the Austrian Succession it was part of. Although Knowles inflicted a tactical defeat on Reggio, he had failed to win a complete victory or intercept the Spanish treasure fleet, and became mired in disputes with several of his captains following the battle. Reggio was court-martialled for his handling of the battle but was ultimately acquitted and continued to serve in the Spanish navy. The battle proved to be the final engagement of both wars.
