The Battle of Monte Pelado (Spanish: Batalla de Monte Pelado; Italian: Battaglia del Monte Pelato) was an early engagement of the Spanish Civil War, which took place on 28 August 1936 in the province of Huesca. During the battle, roughly 100 Italian anti-fascist volunteers defended Torre Lierta (nicknamed Monte Pelato by the volunteers) from a trained and well-equipped Nationalist force several times its size. The Italians held out for four hours against a frontal assault and flanking maneuvers, before counterattacking. The anti-fascist victory in the battle opened the way for a further series of Republican offensives in Huesca.
