The 1963 Skopje earthquake (Macedonian: Скопски земјотрес од 1963 година) occurred in present-day North Macedonia (at the time, it was called the Socialist Republic of Macedonia). The 6.1 moment magnitude shock had a maximum Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme) and resulted in more than 1,000 deaths and between 3,000 and 4,000 injuries. More than 200,000 people were left homeless. About 80 percent of the city was destroyed.
