The 1991 eruption of Mount Unzen (Japanese: 1991年の雲仙岳噴火) is the volcanic disaster caused by the eruption of Mount Unzen in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan.
Volcanic activity began in November 1990, and a large-scale pyroclastic flow occurred on June 3, 1991, causing extensive damage. In total, 43 people were either killed or have disappeared. The volcanic activity finally subsided in 1995.
Until the 2014 eruption of Mount Ontake, the event was the deadliest volcanic disaster in post-war Japan.
The event is known in Japanese as the Heisei eruption (平成大噴火, Heisei daifunka).
