On March 10, 2009, a homicide followed by a fatal shooting spree occurred across several different locations between the communities of Kinston, Samson, and Geneva, Alabama, United States. That afternoon, 28-year-old Michael Kenneth McLendon shot sixteen people, ten fatally. McLendon's spree is the deadliest mass shooting by a lone gunman in Alabama's history, as well as the most victim heavy mass murder in Alabama's history. It surpassed the Will Reynolds incident, which previously held the record, by three fatalities. McLendon first killed his mother and subsequently tried to burn the house down in Coffee County. Traveling to Samson, he killed his maternal grandmother, an uncle, two cousins, and two family friends, and wounded six others. When law enforcement reached him, McLendon committed suicide. He was said to have been depressed about a lack of work; in a note he said that his mother's family was not providing him or his mother with adequate support.
