On June 6, 2017, in Sandy, Utah, Jeremy Patterson rammed his truck into a vehicle and opened fire on the riders, killing two and injuring two before killing himself. This was the result of a domestic dispute between Patterson and his ex-girlfriend Memorez Rackley, who was killed in the attack. Rackley had contacted the police before the incident concerning threats from her ex-boyfriend, and she was ineligible to acquire a protective order because of the nature of their relationship. The Utah police departments involved in the case said they were reviewing their response procedures in cases of domestic violence, and the Utah State Legislature passed legislation meant to stop similar incidents from happening in Utah.
